VILLA ZORAYDA

Built in the late 1800's to serve as a winter residence for a wealthy northern businessman, Zorayda Castle set a precedence for architecture in old San Augustin. In 1904, the Castle was leased out and transformed into the Zorayda Club, a popular mob hangout.

After the death of the original owner, Zorayda Castle, was sold to Ibrahim Karim. In the 1920s, he converted the club into a casino and speakeasy until the end of prohibition in 1933, when Ibrahim and his family converted the castle again into a place of residence. After the apparent death of Ibrahim's youngest daughter Nasrin, the rest of the Karim family moved out of the castle and sold it to the Mussallem family, who'd been interested in the castle for years.

Zorayda Castle was opened as a museum in 1938, and has operated as such since then. The museum is most often closed before sunset, but has occasionally served as Elysium.
